Storage unit sizes

What fits in each common size, drawn to scale, with the median prices we found on facility websites.

Short answer: a 10x10 (100 square feet) is a common pick for a furnished one-bedroom apartment, and a 10x15 suits most two-bedroom homes. A 5x10 can work for a studio or a light one-bedroom. Most units are about 8 feet tall, so you can stack.

Operators do not agree exactly on what fits. CubeSmart sizes a 10x10 for a one-bedroom, while Public Storage calls it two small bedrooms and U-Haul says about three rooms. Treat the ranges below as a starting point, and size up if you have bulky furniture.

Prices are the lowest online monthly price for each size on the facility's own website, for the facilities in our directory, checked in 2026. We show a median only with 10 or more prices. All of these prices come from Public Storage locations, so they reflect its rates, not the whole market. Facilities with confirmed 24/7 gate access rarely post prices by size, so we cannot compare them yet.

How to pick a size

  • List what you are storing, starting with the largest pieces. CubeSmart recommends this as the first step.
  • Plan to stack. With most ceilings near 8 feet, according to Public Storage, height matters as much as floor area.
  • Leave a walkway if you will need things often.
  • Between two sizes, choose the bigger one if you have sofas, mattresses or appliances.
  • For night visits, check that the facility has confirmed 24/7 gate access, not just a 24-hour listing. See gate access vs office hours.

Questions

What size storage unit do I need for a one-bedroom apartment?

A 10x10 is a common pick for a fully furnished one-bedroom. CubeSmart lists a 10x10 for a one-bedroom apartment, and Public Storage suggests a 5x15 or 10x10 for most one-bedrooms. If you have little furniture, a 5x10 can be enough.

What size storage unit do I need for a two-bedroom home?

Usually a 10x15. Public Storage and CubeSmart both size a 10x15 for about two bedrooms. With bulky furniture or appliances, look at a 10x20.

How tall are storage units?

Most are about 8 feet tall, according to Public Storage, CubeSmart and StorageMart. Lockers and some indoor units are shorter, so ask if you plan to stack high.

Can I keep a car in a storage unit?

A standard car usually fits in a 10x20, according to CubeSmart and StorageMart. Trucks and SUVs may need a 10x25 or 10x30. Not every unit allows vehicles, so check before you rent.

Can I switch to a different size later?

Usually yes. StorageMart, for example, says you can move to a bigger or smaller unit if one is available. Ask the facility how a transfer affects your rate.

Do units with 24/7 gate access cost more?

We cannot say yet. We have 5,208 size prices from facility websites, but fewer than 10 per size come from facilities with confirmed 24/7 gate access. Ask each facility whether 24-hour access is included in the rent.
