Gate code not working
Why a storage gate code stops working, what to check first, and who you can reach after hours.
Short answer: most gate codes fail because of an overdue balance, a visit outside the facility's gate hours, or a mistyped code. Check your account and the gate hours first, then call the number posted at the keypad.
Gate hours trip up a lot of night visits. Of the 1,281 facilities in our directory whose gate hours we have checked, 1,119 close the gate at night, most often 6:00 AM to 10:00 PM daily, even though every one is listed as open 24 hours on Google.
Common causes
| Cause | What to do |
|---|---|
| Overdue balance | Pay online, by phone or at the office. Access may not return until the next business day. |
| Outside gate hours | Check the gate hours, not the office hours, and come back when the gate opens. |
| Mistyped code | Re-enter it slowly, including any start or end symbol your facility uses. |
| Rental not started | If you booked a future move-in date, your code may not work until that day. |
| Keypad offline | Call the posted number. A power or internet outage can stop the keypad or the gate. |
Check your account first
Gate software vendor SpiderDoor lists a past-due balance as the usual reason a code is switched off, along with a move-in date that has not arrived yet. StorageMart's security FAQ explains its keypad messages: "Access Denied" points to a balance or a typo, and "Timed Out" means access hours have ended.
Paying at night does not always fix it straight away. CubeSmart says an after-hours payment on a delinquent account will not restore access until the next business day.
Then check the gate hours
Many gates close at night even when the listing says 24 hours. StorageMart notes that 6 AM to 10 PM is a common schedule and that longer access needs approval. See gate access vs office hours to tell the two apart.
Re-enter the code carefully
- Some systems use symbols. Public Storage codes start with * and end with #.
- Look up your code in the operator's app or message. Public Storage tenants can also text OPEN to 28342.
- Wait a moment between tries if the keypad seems slow to respond.
When the keypad itself is down
Most keypads need power and an internet connection. Inside Self Storage, a trade publication, notes that a gate stops wherever it is during a power cut, and that outages tend to be short. SpiderDoor also mentions sync delays and time zone mismatches in the gate system. None of these can be fixed at the keypad, so call the facility.
Who to call after hours
Start with the phone number on the keypad or office door. Support hours vary by operator:
- StorageMart: 24/7 customer care.
- SmartStop: app support from 5 AM to 10 PM Pacific.
- U-Haul: chat, text or phone.
- Public Storage: the local office during business hours.
- 10 Federal Storage: phone during business hours.
What not to do
- Do not follow another car through the gate. Public Storage and StorageMart both ask every tenant to use their own code.
- Do not cut a lock on your unit, even your own. StorageMart warns against it.
- Do not borrow someone else's code. Codes are tied to your account and logged.
If you have been locked out for nonpayment
Most states let a facility deny access once rent is late, and eventually sell the contents, after giving notice. The rules differ by state. For example:
- Florida law lets an owner deny access once rent is 5 days past due, and sets notice and advertising steps before a sale. You can redeem your property by paying before the sale.
- Louisiana law allows an owner to overlock the unit.
- Georgia's consumer protection office explains the lien process for tenants there.
Operators describe their own process too, such as Public Storage's lien and auction FAQ. If you are behind, contact the facility during office hours as soon as you can.
Avoid the problem next time

Questions
Why is my storage gate code not working?
The most common reasons are an overdue balance, arriving outside the facility's gate hours, a mistyped code, or a rental that has not started yet. Less often, the keypad has lost power or its internet connection.
Will paying my balance at night get me in right away?
Not always. CubeSmart, for example, says a payment made after hours on a delinquent account will not restore access until the next business day. Ask your facility how quickly payments unlock the gate.
What does "Timed Out" mean on a storage keypad?
At StorageMart, it means you are trying to enter outside your access hours. "Access Denied" there points to an overdue balance or a mistyped code.
Can I follow another car through the gate?
No. Operators such as Public Storage and StorageMart ask every tenant to enter with their own code. Gate logs record who came in, and following someone else can break your rental agreement.
Can a facility lock me out for not paying?
Yes, in many states. Florida law, for example, lets an owner deny access once rent is 5 days past due, and Louisiana allows an owner to overlock the unit. State rules on notice and sale vary.
What if I get stuck inside after hours?
Call the number posted at the keypad or office. StorageMart, for example, offers 24/7 customer care for this. In an emergency, call 911.
