Gate access vs office hours
Two facilities can both say 'Open 24 hours' and mean very different things. Here is how to tell which one you are getting.
Short answer: 24-hour gate access means you can reach your unit at any hour. A 24-hour office or kiosk means you can rent or pay at any hour. A facility can have either one, both, or neither, even when Google says "Open 24 hours."
The two kinds of 24 hours
| 24-hour gate access | 24-hour office or kiosk | |
|---|---|---|
| Reach your unit at night | Yes | Not necessarily |
| Rent a unit at night | Not necessarily | Yes |
| Who it suits | Shift workers, contractors, late moves | Last-minute rentals |
Why Google hours are not enough
Google lets a business show one set of opening hours. Storage facilities use it differently: some enter their gate hours, some enter office hours, and some enter 24 hours because a kiosk or online rental is always available. That is why every listing in our directory of 1,425 facilities shows "Gate access: not yet confirmed" until we or the owner confirm it.
How to check before you rent
- Call the facility and ask whether tenants can enter the gate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
- Ask whether that covers every unit type. Indoor and climate-controlled buildings sometimes lock earlier than the outer gate.
- Ask whether 24-hour access is included in the rent or costs extra.
- Get the answer in your rental agreement if late access matters to you.
Questions
Does "Open 24 hours" on Google mean I can reach my unit at 3 a.m.?
Not always. Google shows one set of hours per listing. A facility may enter 24 hours because its gate is always open to tenants, because its rental kiosk runs all night, or both. Call and ask which applies.
What should I ask before renting?
Ask whether the gate is open to tenants 24 hours, whether every unit (including indoor and climate-controlled units) is reachable after hours, whether 24-hour access costs extra, and when the office is staffed.
