Does 24-hour access cost extra?
What operators publish about after-hours access pricing, and the other fees worth asking about before you sign.
Short answer: sometimes. Some facilities include 24-hour access in the rent, some charge more for it, and many do not offer it at all. We found no major operator that publishes a set price for it, so ask before you rent.
Only 162 of the 1,425 facilities in our directory (11.4%) have confirmed 24/7 gate access, even though all are listed as open 24 hours on Google.
What operators say about after-hours access
- Moving marketplace HireAHelper notes that not every facility offers 24/7 access and that you may pay extra for it.
- StorageMart says extended access beyond its usual hours needs approval.
- Box-n-Go, a Los Angeles operator, says 24-hour access almost always costs more. It sells a competing service, so read that with care.
What our data shows
We collect the lowest online price per unit size from each facility's own website. Facilities with confirmed 24/7 gate access gave us no prices by size, so we cannot yet say whether they cost more. The size guide shows median prices at facilities with set gate hours.
Other fees to ask about
| Fee | Published example |
|---|---|
| Admin fee at move-in | $29 at a CubeSmart in Newton, MA. U-Haul says its owned locations charge none. |
| Lock | $19.99 at the same CubeSmart. |
| Protection plan or insurance | $20 on the same CubeSmart page. U-Haul coverage starts at $8.95 a month for $1,000. |
| Late fee | Often $15 to $20, or 15% to 20% of rent, according to Inside Self Storage. |
| Overlock fee | Often $10 to $20, according to Inside Self Storage. |
These are examples, not national averages. Your facility's rental agreement sets the real amounts, and state law may cap some fees.
Insurance rules differ
- Public Storage requires coverage.
- StorageMart asks for proof of insurance or its own coverage plan.
- U-Haul says you do not have to buy its coverage.
Late payments
StorageMart says it has no grace period on rent. A late balance can also switch off your gate code, which matters most if you visit at night. See gate code not working.
Questions to ask before you rent
- Is the gate open to tenants 24 hours, and does that cover my unit's building?
- Does 24-hour access cost extra, or need approval?
- What is the admin fee, and do I need to buy a lock?
- Is insurance or a protection plan required, and can I use my own?
- When is rent late, and what are the late and overlock fees?

Questions
Does 24-hour storage access cost extra?
Sometimes. Not every facility offers it, and some charge more for it, either through a higher rent or an approved extended-access arrangement. We found no major operator that publishes a set dollar price for 24-hour access, so ask each facility directly.
Is 24/7 storage more expensive than regular storage?
We cannot say from our data yet. Facilities with confirmed 24/7 gate access rarely post prices by unit size online, so we do not have enough prices to compare. Get quotes from a 24/7 facility and a set-hours facility near you.
What fees should I expect when renting a storage unit?
Common extras are an admin fee at move-in, a lock, a protection plan or proof of insurance, and late or overlock fees if you pay late. Amounts vary by operator and state.
Do I need insurance for a storage unit?
Many operators require it. Public Storage requires coverage, StorageMart asks for proof of insurance or its own coverage plan, and U-Haul says it does not require you to buy its coverage.
Are late fees capped?
In some states, yes. Inside Self Storage notes that state law may limit late fees. Check your rental agreement and your state rules.
